Does anybody out there know of a easy to use cheap database for CD and LP collections? It would need to be able to hold the following information, name of Album, name of Artist(s), songs or tracks on the album and genre. Also it would need to run on a XP based PC.

I used Microsoft Access to create my own database. You can create it as detailed or generic as you want, that way. If you have Access, I can send you the basic database that I created.

When I read the headling of this thread, I first thought of something akin to the Internet Movie Database. How hard would it be to create a Wikipedia-like online database for recorded material...CDs, LPs, cassettes, 8-tracks, etc? This would come in handy for me on many occasions.

Hello vince,

Thank you for the recommendation. I have not yet finished digitizing my collection (particularly the records as that take time), so any and all recommendations will be looked into. I need a database that will allow me to exaclty know what albums I have so I do not duplicate any in my collection while at record stores and garage sales.

I've done this with my music and literature collections.

The music database, as I set it up, allows for media (records, CDs, etc) to be defined by artist and title and then songs are specified. Each song needs to be defined (by writer, if desired, but I haven't gone that far yet) so that if you had, for example Quiet Riot's "Mama Weer All Crazee Now" and Slade's versions (I have the former, not the latter), you can link the two together. If you wanted a report by song (someone requested something specific) or by artist, it could be easily generated. I have a 400-page report (it helps to print them out four to a page, double sided) detailing each record/CD and all of the songs on them in order by artist and date of release.
