Big Black Disk

Modern Vinyl

I'm about to post a classifieds section here for everyone - what I need is a list of categories. I thought we'd separate music by genre (if we separate them by label, I'll be typing forever). So - how about a useful list of genres (we don't have to explore every niche of Death Metal, for instance - "Death Metal" will probably suffice).

Send me your lists, let's refine as a group, and then I'll post the classifieds for everyone to use.

The broader the categories the better. Too many categories get overwhelming and reduce people's exploration of of music just outside of their comfort level:

-Rock and Pop (which include Folk, Metal, Country etc.)

-Jazz (this would include dixieland, big band, and new age)

-Blues (Delta, Chicago, Country blues)

-Classical (including Baroque, Romantic, etc basically anything using orchestral instruments)

-Country might be a separate category. Lumping it in with "Rock and Pop" does seem like a bit of a stretch but then that brings up the questions of where to put Alt-Country (like Ryan Adams, Lucinda Williams, etc.)

Cop Rock? Wouldn't that be limited to Eddie Money?

I like your idea, Alan ... I was tempted to go for detail on the categories, but it seems like you could go forever.

Chris, Alan's is pretty good. Under classical, you need Chamber Music, Choral ,and maybe Oprea.Country could be broken down to Bluegrass, New grass, Alt (no depression) and classic(You know the old stuff country radio don't play no more Buck, Merl , Patsy, Waylon,Tom T Hall). And Film Music / Soundtracks/ Broadway Cop Rock could also include RANDY NEWMAN REMEMBER HE DID THE MUSIC FOR THE TV SHOW "COP ROCK ON ABC

In the shop I have a simple separation :
Rock
R&B
Hip-Hop
Jazz
DJ/Dance
Classical
Folk
Blues
Soundtrack
Comedy
Country
Lounge
Big Band
Misc./ Various Artist
Just real simple and it puts all of the main genre's used out there (at least I'd like to think haha)
Thanks and I will be listing some things tomorrow, or maybe tonight.
Thanks Chris!!!! This site is great

Hey Heather - thanks for the list this is a bit more complete than I have now. I'll have to implement it later on (headed out to a family BBQ now)

Have a great weekend!

Please add the following to my previous list:

-Hip-Hop/Rap (I think it's different enough from "Rock and Pop" to have it's own category

What about World Music? Latin? Reggae?

I'll make everyone a deal: if you have something to list and the category isn't represented - I'll put it there.
Just let me know what you need.
