HD TV is real. the difference between regular480 i and HD 1080 i or 1080 p is vast .I own 2 full 1080 p Sony Bravia 's one is a XBR top of the line LCD.If you have only seen 720 HD 1080 is a big deal .The problem is all the Blu Ray Hype. I Have the only 2nd generation Combo HD DVD and Blu ray DVD the LG -BH200 a super deck. And passed on my experience HD DVD is as good or better than Blu Ray. In fact using HDMI and upsampling a regular 480 DVD to 1080P is very close to Blu Ray. You don't have 7.1 or True Dolby sound, or DTS 7.1 but who really cares. Blu Ray was first used as a HD recording system in Japan and as a playback it has far more compression than HD DVD, but it has longer storage per disc than HD DVD. Why did Blu Ray win ? Try Play Station.I'm sorry that Toshiba gave up so soon as I feel that it is a better format. Both my Home Theater and PC are HD DVD and Blu Ray.So Jim HD TV is a real step forward just don't buy in to all the Blu Ray hype. As far as analog sound, I'll always be a Analog Guy first and foremost, but there are some excellent CD decks now. I own one A Rega Planet

It won't be long before the physical formats for video are a thing of the past and we'll have streaming 720p from many sources. I've been fairly shocked at how good the quality of HD was streaming/downloading from Apple TV. And it's only going to get better. BluRay has only so much shelf life in this world, and with companies like Netflix streaming HD (compressed) - the market is lining up for content delivery without it being trapped on a disc.

maybe it's my source {direct tv.} , but i can remember being able at one time with a different receiver to tune analog or digital with the touch of a remote, and the analog signal was always better in the hd mode. this was using a 1080 hd plasma screen. then again maybe i'm just a diehard luddite.

I've got a client out in the San Diego area, and in his home theater he's got a CRT projector. He can afford anything he wants with no worries, but he wanted a CRT. And the picture on the screen looks better than any digital projector I've seen, regardless of cost or technology.

Chris is your client using a processor(Faraoudja, etc) with his CRT or is it"barefoot"? I do agree with you that Blu Rays day's are shorter than Sony would like to admit . But ther4 will always be people like me who will want the option of having a physcial. version of his content.

He had a Faroudja upscaler.

And speaking of physical media, you should see his collection of laser disks!

excuse me for jumping back in here, but what i was really getting at is, digital {in whatever format} is a L O N G way from the " effect" of analog.
